Visa Information
All passports must be valid for a minimum of 6 months from the date of entry into Indonesia and have at least 2 blank pages available for stamps.

There are three ways of entering Indonesia:

1. Visa on arrival.

Visas on arrival can be issued to nationals of Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Canada, China, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Fiji, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Laos, Latvia, Libya, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Maldives, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Panama, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Surinam, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and USA for a maximum of 30 days, extendable once only for another 30 days at a local immigration office inside Indonesia. However, obtaining a visa from an Indonesian embassy or consulate before traveling is also possible and will allow you to go through the immigration channel for visa holders rather than the sometimes congested VOA and Visa waiver channels at the immigration check-points.

Visa on arrival fees: As of January 2010, the only type of visa on arrival available is US$25 for 30 days, extendable once to up to 30 days. This can be done in an immigration office inside Indonesia for an officially published fee of Rp 250,000, it is recommended to do this ten days prior the visa expiration date. Exact change in dollars is also recommended, although a selection of other major currencies including rupiah may be accepted, and any change will usually be given in rupiah, and at a very bad exchange rate. Credit cards are normally accepted in Bali, but don't count on this elsewhere.

2. Visa in advance / before arrival.

Nationals of countries not listed above are required to apply for visas through the nearest Indonesian Embassy or consulate. Single-entry visas are valid for 60 days and fairly routine if pricy at US$50-100 depending on the individual country and prevailing exchange rates. Multiple entry visas are also available but as the issuance policy varies in different embassies and is occasionally changed it is best to enquire at your nations embassy well in advance of departure. Normally Indonesian embassies and consulates stipulate 3 clear working days for processing however applications may take at least one week to be processed.

The citizens of 17 countries need to obtain an approval from the immigration services head office the Direktorat Jenderal Imigrasi in Jakarta. The 17 countries are: Afghanistan, Israel, Albania, North Korea, Angola, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Cameroon, Somalia, Cuba, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Ghana, Tonga, Iraq and those effected must have a sponsor in Indonesia either a personal or company, the sponsor must go in person to the Immigration Head Office in South Jakarta (Jakarta Selatan) and must produce aphotocopy of applicant's passport, a supporting letter and the applicant's photograph. When it is approved, the Immigration Head Office will sends a copy of approval letter to the applicant.

3. Visa waiver.

Indonesia allows visa free entry to the citizens of 12 countries. The nationals of these countries who are going on holiday, attending conventions or engaging in similar such activities are allowed to stay in Indonesia of up to 30 days without a visa. This type of visa cannot be extended, transferred or converted to any other kind of visa; nor can it be used as a working permit. Those visitors eligible under the visa waiver program have a visa issued at the Indonesian border checkpoints with that issuance subject to the discretion of the visa officer. The visa is not for employment and is not extendable. The citizens of the following countries are eligible: Brunei, Chile, Ecuador, Hong Kong SAR (Special Administrative Region), Macau SAR (Special Administrative Region), Malaysia, Morocco, Peru, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam www.deplu.go.id/Pages/ServiceDisplay.aspx?IDP=7&IDP2=22&Name=ConsularService&l=en. These visas cannot be extended or converted to another type of visa.

Language
Indonesia's national language is Bahasa Indonesia but English is widely spoken and understood.

Time Zone
Bali is in the Central Indonesian Time zone, which is GMT+8 hours.

Climate
Bali enjoys warm, tropical weather all year. Temperatures average between 21o to 33oC (68o to 93oF) year round. There is comparatively little difference between the daytime and night time temperatures. However, in the mountainous areas, temperatures can go as low as 5oC at night.

In general, Bali experiences two seasons: moist and wet. The dry season is normally from May to October, whereas the rainy season is normally from November to April, during which it can rain for several hours each day. The rain tends to be intermittent, however, with plenty of sun in between. Humidity varies between 60% and 100%.

Clothing
Light clothing advisable due to the hot, humid climate. Trousers or slacks and shirts are generally considered appropriate. Long suits and tie or long-sleeved batik shirts are required for formal meetings and functions. Proper decorum should especially be observed when visiting places of worship.

Electric Current
The electric current in use throughout Indonesia is 220-230 volts at 50Hz. Outlets are the European standard CEE-7/7 "Schukostecker" or "Schuko" or the compatible, but non-grounded, CEE-7/16 "Europlug" types. Power outlet adapters are available at most hotels.

Gratuities
A 10% service is usually included in the bill at most hotels and restaurants. Extra tips for service is at the discretion of satisfied customers. Tips for airport porters are usually Rp15,000 / USD 2 per bag.

Recommended Cash / Credit Card / Traveler Check Usage
The Indonesian currency is Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Most foreign currencies are easily exchanged at airports, banks, hotels or money-changers. The currency exchange rate fluctuates regularly. Please refer to the following link for Bank Indonesia's (Indonesia's Central Bank) daily exchange rates: www.bi.go.id/web/en/Moneter/Kurs+Bank+Indonesia/Kurs+Uang+Kertas+Asing/

Banking hours are from 08.00 am to 14.00 noon Mondays to Fridays, and from 08.00 am to 11.00 am on Saturdays. Banks in hotels usually stay open longer hours while money changers are generally open till late evening. A wide network of ATMs with VISA/PLUS, MASTERCARD MAESTRO and CIRRUS facilities is available throughout Bali and major cities in Indonesia.

Travelers' checks are accepted by leading banks and hotels in major cities, including Bali. Credit cards such as Diners Club and America Express, Visa and Master Card are widely accepted at hotels, department stores, shops, restaurants and pubs. According to Indonesian banking regulations, payment by credit cards will be charged in the local currency.

Waiting time is Rp20,000 per hour. Trips outside southern Bali will incur an extra charge of 30%. Car rental services, with or without chauffeur, are also widely available. Average rates range from Rp400,000 to 800,000 for the whole day depending on the type of vehicle. Arrangements for car rental can be made at most hotels.

Mobile Telephone Accessibility for Foreign Systems
Most international GSM operators have roaming agreements with local GSM operators in Indonesia. If you have a Global System Mobile (GSM) cellular phone, ask your local GSM operator about the "roaming agreement/facility" in Indonesia. With the roaming facility, you can use your own cellular phone and GSM SIM card in Indonesia. When using your GSM cellular phone for:
1) Local calls in Bali: Dial 0 -361(area code for Bali) -(telephone number)
2) Local calls to other cities in Indonesia: Dial 0 -(area code) -(telephone number)
3) International calls: Dial 001-(country code)-(area code)-(telephone number)
International Direct Dialing prefix - Besides "001", you can also use "007" or "008".
For Directory inquires: 108 (if using a cell phone locally dial 0361 108)

Shopping
Bali is also a shopping paradise with countless shopping spots ranging from shopping complexes, department stores, boutiques and stalls selling fashion, home wares, art and crafts of all sorts. While majority of the shops are concentrated the Kuta, Legian and Seminyak areas, shops can be found lining many streets throughout the island. Ubud (25 km North of Denpasar) and the surrounding villages of Pengosekan, Mas and Batuan are the best places to shop for a variety of arts, ranging from 'wayang style' paintings, polished woodcarving and antiques to traditional Balinese carvings made from volcanic stone.

Shops are open daily from 09.00 am to 09.00 pm. While prices at department stores and boutiques are fixed, bargaining is welcomed at small shops and stalls.

Taxi
Metered taxis are very common in southern Bali as far north as Denpasar but few and far between elsewhere. The starting flagfall charge is Rp 5,000 for the first two kilometres and the meter ticks up Rp 5,000 per km after that. Waiting time is charged at Rp 20,000 per hour. Trips outside southern Bali will incur an extra charge of 30%, as the driver has to go back empty. By far the largest and most reliable taxi company is Bali Taksi/Blue Bird; they have a telephone call service number: 62 361 701111 for both instant taxis and for advance bookings. If you are hailing a taxi on the street, Bali Taksi cars are always sky blue with a white top light. The cars are modern and the drivers well-informed with a decent level of English-language ability. If day-tripping, it is often cheaper and more convenient to arrange for your taxi to wait and take you back.
